What is a Franchise? an Overview of the Opportunity

A franchise is famously defined as a business system where the owner (franchisor) allows other individuals (franchisees) to use their name, logo, products and services, and provide operational guidance, in exchange for a royalty fee. Franchisees in this system are at the liberty to independently run their business, but they remain part of a larger network, the franchisor. For the past several decades, franchising is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and efficient business models available.

In today’s world, plenty of successful brands have franchised their ventures. These companies range from fast food restaurants such as KFC, McDonalds and Burger King, to luxury care service providers such as Avis, Geico, and Hertz.

The benefits of franchising could be huge for the individual, depending on the size and scope of the business. For the franchisor, monetizing the brand and driving sales becomes a much easier affair than starting a business from the ground up. How Franchise works? A detailed overview for Entrepreneurs looking to Invest

A successful franchise investment requires three parties – the franchisor, the franchisee, and an intermediary that binds the two together.

The franchisor, or brand owner, enters into a legal agreement with a franchisee, typically for a certain duration. This usually involves royalty payments from the franchisee to the franchisor. The franchisor owes certain benefits and responsibilities to the franchisee – providing training, ongoing operational support, the right to use the franchisor’s name and logo, legal advice, and more.

In exchange for these services, franchisees are expected to generate revenue and maintain a certain standard of quality. Franchisees also typically pay endorsement fees or a percentage of royalties from sales. In addition, to working together, the two parties agree to a termination agreement stating that either the franchisor or franchisee can end the agreement, though the terms of the termination will have to be mutually decided upon.

The intermediary acts as mediator between the two entities, providing advice and guidance during the course of their working relationship. He or she will provide additional support during the start-up period and help ensure compliance with the franchising agreement.
